Kazuma Hashimoto (橋本一馬 Hashimoto Kazuma) is one of the main characters of Cheer Boys!! series by Ryō Asai. He is a first-year sociology student at Meishiin University and a member of the male cheerleading club, Breakers.

Appearance[]

Kazuma has spiky black hair that points in all directions and purple eyes. He often wears casual clothing when attending classes at the university.

Personality[]

Kazuma is a caring guy towards his friends, and the one he loves. He‘s always cheerful, but when it comes to the ones he cares about he can become quite serious. He has a tendency to keep his feelings to himself.

Background[]

Before Kazuma's parents died, they were amazing cheerleaders. Wanting to make them proud, Kazuma once given the opportunity decided to start his own cheer club, leading us to where we are now. He also has a sick grandmother with memory loss, and while he cares for her deeply, seeing her lose more and more of her memories takes a toll on Kazuma.

Plot[]

On the surface, Kazuma is a very pleasant and charismatic guy. He knows how to get people to listen to him, and has no problem being casual with people he doesn't know. He is a deeply motivated individual and he puts his entire being into things he's passionate about. As we learn more about him though, we can see the edges start to crack. We see Kazuma living in a cramped and barely functioning apartment by himself, we learn his only job is tutoring, we see his grandma in the hospital. Kazuma tells us his parents died when he was young, and that they were great cheerleaders. Haruki Bandō says that he had no idea they were cheerleaders, despite them being very important to Kazu. Throughout the series we see more cracks starting to form. Kazuma leaving early, skipping practice, being unfocused and snappy at times. When Kazuma does finally reach his breaking point, he says that he's been lying to Haruki and the others. The anime shows this in a less emotional way than the manga. The manga fully shows just how deeply this revelation hit Haruki. Kazuma had been pretending to be happy, pretending that everything was fine, when in reality the weight of everything going on in his life had been crushing. This knowledge definitely brings a different feeling to all of Kazuma's interactions before this moment.
